Sex Crimes on Campus: Where is it Worst?

Filed in archive News by Greg Cruey on February 10, 2008

Reader's Digest has published a campus safety report that includes rankings of 285 colleges and universities in the US.

"Is Your College Student Safe at School?" is the name of the piece and it begins with a reference to the Virginia Tech tragedy. It also makes data available on a number of different types of crimes committed on campus during 2004 and 2005.

Among the most reveling information in the report is the number of sex crimes (like rape) involving the use of force on campus.

The worst campus in the US for that statistics in 2005 was the University of California-Davis, where there were 24 forcible sex offenses in 2005. Ohio State University was the second worst school in this category, with 29 forcible sex offenses in 2005. The University of Maryland had 27 such sex crimes on campus and the University of Michigan had 24 during 2005. Vanderbilt and the University of Virginia both had 20 sex offenses in 2005.

Rounding out the list of the ten worst schools for sex crimes involving the use of force were Syracuse University (with 19), the University of Rhode Island (with 16), and Indiana University and Rutgers University's New Brunswick Campus (both with 15).

What was the overall least safe university in the country, according to the Reader's Digest article? Butler University in Indianapolis.

We'll have more on this study in the coming weeks...
