SACS has been seeking to upgrade its image with the Feds as having strict standards since the Feds are investigating the role of accrediting bodies like SACS. Whitmore was a victim of educational politics at the highest levels, a shame since he appears to have done a very good job at Tech and since every college gets criticized for that standard in some form or fashion. Usually, they just let you do a follow-up report outlining the changes, but with the Feds ramped up against accrediting bodies, SACS had to make an example of Tech. The lesson? Even the big boys have to follow the rules. Perhaps especially so.
